social-entrepreneursWe bring you more exciting news for Barefoot College, including prizes, publicity, and funding for the next generation of Solar Grandmothers. Barefoot College, the world’s only college for the rural poor, is one of our long-time grantees.

This fall, Barefoot competed in the Social Entrepreneurs Challenge sponsored by the Skoll Foundation and the Huffington Post. The Challenge brought in over $3.4 million to the 50 participating organizations, each of which was selected for its social innovations and commitment to lasting social change in their particular subject areas.

Barefoot College raised over $13,000 for their cause over the course of the crowd funding challenge. The College received over $18,000 in matched donations from the Skoll Foundation, bringing in more than $31,000 in total. Barefoot also won several prizes from the Huffington Post, such as social media posts, blogs, and a chance to visit the Huffington Post Newsroom in New York.

We are so proud of Barefoot College, and we appreciate everyone who contributed to the campaign and supported the Solar Grandmothers, the Night Schools, and all the other extraordinary Barefoot Solutions.

Now, as we ring in the New Year, we celebrate ongoing grantees like Barefoot College, and we welcome new and exciting organizations, ideas and causes into our work. This year, we will continue funding projects that support clean energy and local livelihoods, alleviate the harshest conditions of poverty, improve opportunities for women and girls, and much more. Wishing everyone a wonderful start to 2014!
