21st Century Citizens

21st Century Citizens

We need thoughtful, compassionate and engaged global citizens to meet the realities of the 21st century. In a world of change and complexity, the capacity to respect each other’s humanity, understand the value of acting beyond one’s individual interests, and remain open to new ideas comes from a well nurtured and balanced society.

In the United States and other developed countries, the foundation supports projects that help young people build the skills to become positive actors in their communities and on the global stage. This includes projects that supplement the traditional curriculum to develop:

  • Curiosity and creativity
  • Future-mindedness
  • Self-respect and respect for others
  • Personal empowerment
  • Risk-taking and confidence
  • Purpose and engagement
  • Public service
  • Holistic well-being

In the developing world, we focus on projects that increase access to, and the quality of, early childhood and elementary education.

Funding Priorities

For the three-year period 2011-2013, we will prioritize projects focused on:

  • Education, experiential learning and engagement with ecological systems and the environment.
